Overview

This unit is designed to focus on the warehousing & transportation strategic management practices and techniques and their effect on the performance of the supply chain. It relates the warehousing and transportation strategy to the alleviation of problems encountered in real world business today.

The key concepts addressed are the strategic role of warehousing, the rational of warehousing activities, the framework of basic warehousing decisions, the warehousing activities requiring space in the warehouse design, the public versus private warehouse services regulation and pricing, the number of warehouses needed in a logistics system and their location, the efficient utilisation of warehouse theory to effective practice, the relationship of warehouses to the global transportation network, the relationship of the warehouses and the transportation means to the types of goods warehoused and transported, the demand and supply of transport, the external costs of transport and the internalisation of them, the characteristics of the various transportation modes, the network and cost analysis of transportation system, the transportation infrastructure and equipment, the intermodal transportation, the logistics transportation problems, the transportation rates and decision analysis, the offshoring and reshoring decisions and their impact on transportation management.

Meet the Instructors

Ms. Argyro Doumani is a versatile professional with 23 years of work experience, coming from an advanced academic and analytical background. Since 2019, she has been the General Manager at the Hellenic Federation of Road Transport and from 2013 to 2018, she was an Executive Assistant to President. She has also worked as a Digital Marketing Executive at White Space – Marketing Services, as a General Manager at Bioluxe Cosmetics, and as a Marketing Manager and Assistant Accountant at Chambre Hellas S.A. She was the vice president of IRU Goods Transport Council for the term 2020-21. She is also a member of the National Logistics Council, the Hellenic Logistics Association (EEL)and the Economic Chamber of Greece. Ms. Doumani holds an MA in Marketing from the University of Portsmouth and an BA in Economics from the University of Piraeus.

Mr Papageorgiou Konstantinos is Co – owner and Managing Director of Papageorgiou Transport & Logistics (PTL) Ltd and participates in the National Council for Development and Competitiveness of Logistics. He is a PhD candidate at the University of Piraeus and holds a Master’s degree in Finance and Management from Birmingham City University and has expanded his knowledge of Sustainable Supply Chain Management as a graduate of Cambridge University after successfully completing the online course.

He emphasizes innovation by participating in highly interesting research projects in the field of transport such as the “E-CALL” for the automatic notification of emergency services in case of an accident. In 2019, was again involved in an EU funded pilot project and became one of the very first transport companies in Europe to test the application of the electronic consignment note (e-CMR), opening the way to a paperless and more sustainable Supply Chain.

In addition, he was awarded in 2020 as the Top Transportation Manager of the Year by the international organization IRU. With a sense of responsibility towards the environment, he has measured the CO2 footprint of the leading company as well as the use of environmentally friendly fuel (CNG).This action resulted in him being awarded by the institution “SUSTAINABLE GREECE” with the Sustainability Award in 2019.

√ provide the understanding of major challenges to effective warehouse and transportation management, including variability, tradeoffs and sustainability.

The forms of coursework depend on the characteristics of each module and may include the following types of assessments: case study, essay, report, dissertation, market analysis, project output, valuation, etc.

In addition each module incorporates multiple self-assessment tests. Self-assessment tests are not part of the formal assessment but completion is strongly encouraged as students will be able to monitor and evaluate their learning process and identify areas requiring improvement.
