Overview

This shipping business sustainability management module centres around the concept of sustainability being integral to ensuring shipping companies can continue to operate on a planet with finite resources and deliver benefits to both shareholders and society. Sustainability challenges and opportunities for shipping are analyzed, including the importance of good leadership in achieving change. The Regulatory environment and international policy instruments, agreements, principles, and the role of a shipping business in shaping a zero-carbon economy are explored. The shipping value chain activities across ships’ lifecycles are reviewed including the role of innovative design, planning, and technology in facilitating a sustainable shipping business. ESG (Environment, Social, Governance) principles are applied to a shipping business within a management system approach incorporating industry best practices guidelines with a clear emphasis on the Environmental pillar. The Social pillar which is increasingly attracting the attention of societies worldwide is also analysed with a focus on human rights and health management because of the pandemic effect which is radically changing the societal perspective of the shipping industry. Governance principles, including transparency, business ethics, diversity, and inclusion, are reviewed and applied to the shipping business environment with a special attention on financial management and reporting. Finally, the importance of effective communication sustainability strategies and goals to internal and external stakeholders is also addressed by exploring how shipping companies can work together with regulators, customers, other businesses, and non-profit organizations to bring about large-scale change in the sustainability arena.
