Overview

The module exposes students to contemporary perspectives in academic research, and in particular focuses on developing a range of skills affecting the identification and formulation of project titles. Special focus is placed on the critical review of available literature and information resources, the use of online databases and other sources. Emphasis is given to the methods used in scientific research, reviewing a range of statistical and non-statistical methods of analyses appropriate for projects in terms of both qualitative and quantitative research. Finally, students will become aware of any research issues associated with conducting research.

Meet the Instructor

Mr Elias Pavlou was educated both in Australia and the UK. He received his first degree in mathematics by the University of Wollongong, Australia. He continued his tertiary studies in the University of NSW, Australia where he acquired a Masters in Statistics. Later on, while working in the city of London as an analyst, he completed a Masters degree in Finance at the University of London, Birkbeck college.

Mr Pavlou has been working at the Business College of Athens since 2009 where he teaches quantitative modules and research methods both at undergraduate and postgraduate level. For the last 5 years he has been a Programme Manager at postgraduate and undergraduate level in the fields of Shipping and Accounting & Finance.

Prior to his teaching career he had been working for about 15 years as a Research Analyst for blue chip companies both in Australia and the City of London. His duties involved proactively supporting the investment management decision making in the areas of performance, fund appraisals and pricing.

√ facilitate the articulation of concise research question(s) and objective(s), critical review the relevant academic material and employ the appropriate research methodology and analysis.

√ enhance skills and knowledge students have learned during their studies.

√ ensure that students’ project contains all the key elements involved in the research process and includes sufficient information for the reader to evaluate the study.

√ develop awareness of research issues in terms of access to data, ethical choices, and credibility of findings.

What you’ll learn

At the end of the module the learner will be able to:

Understand and acknowledge the different stages of a research process and put forward a research proposal including framing research question(s), providing an initial critical review of the literature and proposing appropriate methodologies for different types of study on a topic relevant to their studies.

Develop advanced critical thinking skills in preparing a literature review of scholarly sources in relation to your research topic with the view of identifying relevant theories, methods, and gaps in existing academic research;

Critically evaluate research strategies and apply research methodologies to collect primary and/or secondary data appropriate to the topic being researched.

Demonstrate advanced competence in analysing, interpreting and synthesising quantitative and/or qualitative data.

Put forward and effectively communicate a feasible research project clearly demonstrating personal responsibility and time management.

 

ASSESSMENT STRATEGY

Based on the Programme Specification, students are formally assessed through the submission of coursework. The forms of coursework depend on the characteristics of each module and may include the following types of assessments: case study, essay, report, dissertation, market analysis, project output, valuation, etc.

In addition each module incorporates multiple self-assessment tests. Self-assessment tests are not part of the formal assessment but completion is strongly encouraged as students will be able to monitor and evaluate their learning process and identify areas requiring improvement.
