This module intends to enhance students’ understanding of specific legal topics concerning the Carriage of Goods by Sea. Special emphasis is given to the implications of legal decision on charter party wording. Moreover students will learn how and when to apply the Hague/Visby and Rotterdam Rules in contracts of carriage of goods by sea, enabling them to critically implement legal issues in shipping practice by the end of the module.

Terms like preliminary Voyage, Arrived ship, Loading Operation and Freight will be clarified. Students will be introduced and will be able to compare Voyage and Time charters and learn the obligations of Charterers. The different types of vessel, safe ports, period of Ηire and trading limits are examined. Finally, the legal elements of Hague/Visby rules, Rotterdam rules, exceptions and limitations from Carrier’s liability and the bills of lading issued under charterparties will be examined also.

√ Examine in depth the legal principles of the three main charters that exist: (a) the time charter, (b) the voyage charter and (c) the demise or bareboat charter
√ Evaluate the legal principles of dispute resolution in shipping and enforcement procedure including the arrest of ships

ASSESSMENT STRATEGY
Based on the Programme Specification, students are formally assessed through the submission of coursework. The forms of coursework depend on the characteristics of each module and may include the following types
of assessments: case study, essay, report, dissertation, market analysis,project output, valuation, etc.
In addition each module incorporates multiple self-assessment tests. Self-assessment tests are not part of the formal assessment but completion is strongly encouraged as students will be able to monitor and evaluate their learning process and identify areas requiring improvement.
